Formula 1 years were a crucial part of his career, when he emerged despite non competitive cars. For his outstanding talent in testing, Montermini became test driver for Benetton, Ferrari and Lola F1. Always among top drivers in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the 24 Hours of Daytona, he also competed with IMSA prototypes and the challenging single seaters of American Formula Cart.
